Economic Testing of Unilateral Vestibular Failure
نویسنده
چکیده
Identifying unilateral vestibular failure of the semicircular canals (SCC) is important in vertigo and dizziness disease. There are different vestibular tests available: rotatory testing (RT), bithermal caloric irrigation (CI) and the video-head-impulse test (vHIT). This review comments on the current knowledge and on economic aspects of the testing methods. RT are a very specials tests and should be only used in specialized vertigo/dizziness centres. It is recommended to use both, vHIT and CI to identify unilateral vestibular failure as the methods do not replace each other.

Prediction of Short-Term Outcome in Acute Superior Vestibular Nerve Failure: Three-Dimensional Video-Head-Impulse Test and Caloric Irrigation
This retrospective study examines acute unilateral vestibular failure (up to seven days after onset) with modern vestibular testing (caloric irrigation and video-head-impulse test, vHIT) in 54 patients in order to test if the short-term outcome of the patients depends on the lesion pattern defined by the two tests. Patients were grouped according to a pathological unilateral caloric weakness wi...
متن کاملAcute Unilateral Vestibular Failure Does Not Cause Spatial Hemineglect
OBJECTIVES Visuo-spatial neglect and vestibular disorders have common clinical findings and involve the same cortical areas. We questioned (1) whether visuo-spatial hemineglect is not only a disorder of spatial attention but may also reflect a disorder of higher cortical vestibular function and (2) whether a vestibular tone imbalance due to an acute peripheral dysfunction can also cause symptom...
متن کاملEffects of Vestibular Rehabilitation Interventions in the Elderly with Chronic Unilateral Vestibular Hypofunction
Introduction: Although vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) methods are relatively popular in treating patients with body balance deficits of vestibular origin, only limited studies have been conducted into customized exercises for unilateral vestibular hypofunction (UVH). Furthermore, very little evidence is available on the outcomes of VRT in the elderly population with chronic UVH. Materi...
متن کاملInferior vestibular neuritis: 3 cases with clinical features of acute vestibular neuritis, normal calorics but indications of saccular failure
BACKGROUND Vestibular neuritis (VN) is commonly diagnosed by demonstration of unilateral vestibular failure, as unilateral loss of caloric response. As this test reflects the function of the superior part of the vestibular nerve only, cases of pure inferior nerve neuritis will be lost. CASE PRESENTATIONS We describe three patients with symptoms suggestive of VN, but normal calorics. All 3 had...
متن کاملInferior vestibular neuritis.
Sudden, spontaneous, unilateral loss of vestibular function without simultaneous hearing loss or brain stem signs is generally attributed to a viral infection involving the vestibular nerve and is called acute vestibular neuritis. The clinical hallmarks of acute vestibular neuritis are vertigo, spontaneous nystagmus, and unilateral loss of lateral semicircular function as shown by impulsive and...
